The YWCA Halifax Department of Womens Economic Advancement is a supportive environment where women and their families discover the tools necessary to gain economic independence. Womens Economic Advancement prides itself on offering financial literacy and skill development services to women at critical turning points in their lives. Women accessing our services will be offered one-on-one financial literacy, job search assistance, resume development assistance, and when applicable, referrals to other community based organizations in the Halifax Regional Municipality.
LAUNCH Career Explorations
The LAUNCH program meets the needs of the young women it serves by incorporating principles of youth engagement, inclusion, and popular education into the programming model. Throughout the program young women are provided a safe space to self-discover talents and explore interests in a holistic, nurturing, and supportive environment.
The YWCAs LAUNCH Program provides young women ages 15-30, who are current recipients of social assistance or who are unemployed or under employed, with the opportunity to participate in a unique educational approach that is driven by and for them centered on their unique needs and issues.
YWCA Halifaxs LAUNCH Internship Program includes 6 weeks of Life Skills and employment readiness training and 25 weeks of internship work placement.
Life Skills and Employment Readiness Training
During the Life Skills and Employment Readiness Training participants will develop the skills, aptitudes and attitudes needed to actively participate in todays workforce. The training includes but is not limited to the following content:
- Portfolio Development
- Financial Literacy
- Microsoft Office Proficiency
- Communication and Conflict Management
- Leadership, Management, and Teamwork
- CPR
- WHMIS
- Employment & Education: Goals and Opportunities
Internship Work Placement
Interns work with a YWCA partner organization to complete this portion of the LAUNCH program. Interns are given clear guidance to their role within the organization and the expectations of the organization. The interns work is related directly to the terms of reference for the placement created by them and their supervisor. This serves as a reporting tool for the placement supervisor, the intern and the LAUNCH Program Coordinator. During the work placement, interns have the opportunity to take part in professional development workshops at least once month and are required to meet with the LAUNCH coordinator for 1 hour per week.

Through the Financial Literacy for Newcomers Project (FLNP), YWCA Halifax, through the support of SEDI, will ensure that 500 newcomers receive financial literacy supports over a period of 20 months, which in turn will increase their access to basic banking, government benefits and services like the Canada Learning Bond, RDSP and TFSA and reduce their use of fringe financial services. YWCA Halifax will deliver this program by working with established partners who deliver services to Newcomers in the Greater Halifax area.

Gaming Foundation Research Project
The future purpose of this project, entitled Financial Empowerment for Women Recovering from Gambling Addiction, will be to provide financial capability services as a component of gambling addiction recovery. In this initial phase for which we are now engaged our intent is to conduct a feasibility study and needs assessment to better understand the need for this service.
Objectives of the research will be measured using qualitative data obtained via surveys, interviews and in-depth focus groups and the ultimate goal is to create a program that will empower women recovering from problem gambling addiction to achieve self-sufficiency around their personal finances through financial literacy education.
